How I shoot: candid, calm, never forced
As a Charlotte branding photographer, I got to the studio early. Not on purpose, but MR Creative Studio happened to be open before my appointment, so I walked in about 18 minutes early. That’s a small thing, but it changed the whole morning. It gave me time to set up the umbrella flash and dial in the extra lighting before my client ever arrived. No scrambling. No fumbling with settings while she watched. By the time she walked through the door, everything was ready.
She noticed right away. “Oh my gosh, this looks amazing.” She could see the whole setup the second she stepped in, the lights already positioned, the space already feeling like a real shoot instead of a room we were about to figure out together. That moment matters to me. When a client sees you’re ready for them, they relax. And a relaxed client photographs a hundred times better than a nervous one.
There’s a get-ready area at the studio, so she had a spot to settle in. I had music going, which I almost always do. Music is one of my favorite tools on a shoot, and I don’t think people expect that. Sometimes I put on something chill to slow the room down. Other times, I ask what the client actually listens to and build the mood around their taste. Either way, they end up vibing instead of being stiff, and that’s the whole point. My style leans candid, a little editorial, but never forced. I want the images to look like you on your best day, not like you’re holding a pose you’ll regret later.
I’ll be honest about one part. This was an early shoot, and I am not a morning person. But when someone books you for a specific time, you show up as the best version of yourself, full stop. So I did. A full cup of coffee before I walked in, and a prayer, because prayer is how I start my day and every project I care about. It gets my head in the game. Then we got to work.
We had a vision board going in, which I love, but the best moments came from going off-script. We found more natural poses that fit her body and her energy better than anything we’d planned. And near the end of a session, once someone feels comfortable in front of the camera, I like to let them play. I tell them to work the camera, do the poses that already feel natural, the ones they know they look good in. Then I tweak from there, a small adjustment to the chin, the hands, the weight in the hips, and suddenly an ordinary pose turns into the shot of the day. That’s usually where the magic lives.
When we wrapped, I ran next door for more coffee and breakfast, then headed home happy. That’s a good morning.
Why I love this studio
A quick word on MR Creative Studio: https://www.mrcreativestudiosclt.com/ because I’ll be back. It’s a Latina-owned space in South Charlotte, around 1,740 square feet, with four different setups to shoot against. It doesn’t have natural light, and that’s exactly why it works so well. It’s fully equipped with everything you’d need for a branding shoot, video, or really any project: lighting, backdrops, speakers, and a prep area. If you know how to light a space, a studio like this gives you total control over the look. And it’s genuinely affordable, which for a working photographer in Charlotte is rare.
If you’re a business owner or creative in Charlotte thinking about a branding shoot, this is the kind of space and morning I want to create for you.
