So you're planning a family session, amazing! Whether you've already booked or you're still thinking about it, there's one question that comes up every single time: what do we wear?
Between coordinating outfits for multiple people, managing everyone's opinions, and worrying if it'll "look right" on camera, I get it. It feels like a lot. But here's the good news: it doesn't have to be complicated. A few simple rules will take you from stressed to sorted in no time.
Let's break it down.
Start with a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits
This is the biggest shift in thinking, and it makes everything easier. You're not trying to dress like a choreographed group. You're trying to look like you belong together.
My go to recommendation: build around neutrals and add one or two pops of color. Think creams, tans, soft whites, warm grays, or muted greens as your base, then let one or two people bring in a color that ties it all together. Dusty blue, terracotta, sage, burgundy, these all photograph beautifully in Charlotte's parks and green spaces.
The goal is cohesion, not a costume.
What to Avoid (Please, I'm Begging You)
A few things that almost always work against you in photos:
Everyone in white. I know, I know, it seems classic. But white can wash people out and show every little wrinkle and stain (especially with kids). If you love that light, airy vibe, try cream or off white instead. Same feel, way more flattering.
Busy patterns and loud prints. One person in a subtle pattern is fine. Everyone in different patterns? Chaos. It pulls the eye away from faces, which is literally the whole point of the photo.
Logos and graphic tees. Your favorite band tee is great for everyday life. In a family portrait? It's just visual noise. Keep it simple and timeless.
Colors that clash with your location. Charlotte's parks are lush and green, so colors that fight with that backdrop (think neon, heavily saturated tones) can make your photos feel off. When in doubt, go warmer and more muted.
A Note on Charlotte's Weather (Especially Summer)
Let's be real, Charlotte summers are no joke. It is hot, it is humid, and the last thing you want is to be miserable in your photos because you wore three layers for the aesthetic.
My advice: dress to feel comfortable, not just to look good. If you have a specific look in mind that's a little warmer (think layers, heavier fabrics), bring a change of clothes. Wear something light and breathable to the session, get comfortable, then switch into the outfit you really want once you're there and we've found our rhythm.
You should leave your session feeling good, not like you survived it.
Textures Are Your Friend
Since you're working with a more neutral palette, texture is what keeps things visually interesting. Linen, lace, knits, denim, chambray, these all add depth and dimension without adding chaos.
Think about how different fabrics and textures play off each other. A flowy linen dress next to a soft cotton button down next to a little one in a linen romper? That's a great photo waiting to happen.
Don't Forget the Accessories
A simple hat or a delicate necklace can take a neutral outfit from basic to editorial. Don't overthink it, but don't skip it either. Scarves, layered bracelets, a cute hair clip for the kids, these small details add personality without taking over the photo.
Shoes Matter More Than You Think
Shoes show up more than people realize, especially if we're shooting in a park and doing any sitting or movement. Make sure they fit your overall look. You don't have to match exactly, but a toddler in sandals next to a mom in heels is a choice.
And if you're doing hair and makeup, do it the morning of, but also plan for movement and a little wind. Natural is always better than stiff.
The Real Secret? Just Feel Like Yourself
The best outfits are the ones where everyone feels good. When you're comfortable in what you're wearing, it shows. When you're pulling at your shirt the whole time, that shows too.
Don't buy something brand new just for the photos if it doesn't actually feel like you. Your family photos should look like your family, on your best, most put together day.
