If you just got engaged — first of all, congratulations!
That's huge. Now comes the fun part: planning your engagement session. And if you're anything like most of my couples, one of the first questions is "where should we take our engagement photos?"
I've been shooting engagement sessions all over Charlotte for years, and honestly? This city has so many beautiful spots that it can feel overwhelming to pick just one. So I put together my go-to list of the best engagement photo locations in Charlotte, NC — the ones I keep coming back to because they just work.
1. Freedom Park
This is the one I recommend the most, and for good reason. Freedom Park has everything — a lake, bridges, winding paths, open fields, and gorgeous trees that look incredible in every season. There's so much variety in one location that your photos won't all look the same.
Best time to shoot: Golden hour, about an hour before sunset. Weekday evenings are ideal because weekends can get busy with families and joggers.
The vibe: Natural, romantic, and relaxed. Perfect if you want that effortless, walking-through-the-park-together kind of feel.
2. McGill Rose Garden
If you want something that feels a little more private and polished, McGill Rose Garden is it. It's tucked right in Uptown Charlotte but feels like a secret garden — lush greenery, beautiful blooms, and way less foot traffic than the bigger parks.
Best time to shoot: Spring and summer when the roses are in full bloom, or early fall after 4 PM when the light gets soft and golden.
The vibe: Elegant, intimate, and timeless. This one photographs beautifully for couples who love a classic, editorial look.
3. Romare Bearden Park
Right in the heart of Uptown, Romare Bearden Park gives you that city-meets-nature feel. You get the Charlotte skyline in the background, modern architecture, water features, and green space all in one spot. It's one of those locations where you can get a totally different look just by turning around.
Best time to shoot: Late afternoon into golden hour. The skyline looks especially stunning as the sun goes down.
The vibe: Modern, urban, and a little bit dressy. Great if you want that "we're a city couple" energy without losing the warmth.
4. South End Murals + Rail Trail
South End is where Charlotte's personality really shows up. Between the murals, the Rail Trail, the breweries, and the overall creative energy of the neighborhood — it's perfect for couples who want something fun and a little different. The Confetti Hearts wall is a classic, and the "From Charlotte, With Love" mural is basically made for save-the-dates.
Best time to shoot: Late afternoon on a weekday. The light hits the murals beautifully, and you avoid the weekend brunch crowds.
The vibe: Artsy, colorful, and full of personality. If you and your partner are the type to grab coffee and walk around a cool neighborhood on a Saturday, this is your spot.
5. Camp North End
This is one of my personal favorites for couples who want something edgy and unique. Camp North End is this incredible industrial-turned-creative space with textured walls, murals, greenery growing through concrete, and so much character. No two sessions here ever look the same.
Best time to shoot: Summer when the greenery softens the industrial edges, or anytime you want that moody, editorial feel.
The vibe: Creative, bold, and editorial. Think exposed brick, vintage doors, and that effortlessly cool look.
6. Marshall Park
Marshall Park is a hidden gem right in Uptown. It has a small pond, beautiful greenery, and one of the best views of the Charlotte skyline — all without the crowds of the bigger parks. It's compact but photographs like a dream.
Best time to shoot: Golden hour. The skyline reflection in the pond at sunset is honestly one of the prettiest things in Charlotte.
The vibe: Romantic and peaceful, with a touch of city sophistication. Great for couples who want nature and skyline in the same frame.
7. Duke Mansion
If you're going for timeless and elegant, Duke Mansion is hard to beat. This historic estate has gorgeous gardens, grand architecture, and that old-Charlotte charm that makes every photo feel like it belongs in a magazine. It's also a popular wedding venue, so shooting your engagement session here is a beautiful way to preview your big day.
Best time to shoot: Late afternoon when the light filters through the trees. Fall is especially stunning here.
The vibe: Classic, sophisticated, and romantic. Perfect for the couple who loves a timeless aesthetic.
8. Jetton Park at Lake Norman
Want to get out of the city for a bit? Jetton Park in Cornelius is about 20 minutes north of Charlotte, right on Lake Norman. You get lakefront views, sandy beaches, trails, and gazebos — it feels like a mini getaway. If you and your partner are outdoorsy or just love being near water, this is the one.
Best time to shoot: Summer mornings are magical here. The light on the lake is unreal.
The vibe: Relaxed, adventurous, and natural. Think barefoot-on-the-beach, wind-in-your-hair kind of photos.
9. UNCC Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens at UNC Charlotte are one of those spots that most people don't think of, but they're absolutely gorgeous for photos. You get diverse plant life, winding paths, a rainforest conservatory, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to forget you're in the middle of a city.
Best time to shoot: Spring for the blooms, fall for the colors. Midweek is best since it's on a university campus.
The vibe: Lush, serene, and a little bit whimsical. Great for nature-loving couples.
10. Downtown Charlotte City Walk
Sometimes the best engagement session isn't at one specific spot — it's a walk through the city together. I love doing downtown Charlotte sessions where we just explore: the French Quarter, random doorways, rooftop views, side streets with great light. It feels spontaneous and real, and the photos always have this energy that you can't plan.
Best time to shoot: Weekday evenings after 5:30 PM when the business crowd thins out and the light gets warm.
The vibe: Spontaneous, fun, and authentically you. Perfect for the couple who'd rather explore than stand in one spot.
A Few Tips From Me to You
Pick a location that feels like you. Don't choose a spot just because it's trendy. If you and your partner spend every weekend hiking, a park session will feel way more natural than posing in front of a mural. And if you're the type to grab drinks at a brewery on a Friday night, South End might be your perfect backdrop.
Timing matters more than you think. Golden hour (the hour before sunset) is when the magic happens. The light is warm, soft, and forgiving — it makes everyone look incredible. I always recommend scheduling your session around this time.
Wear something you actually feel good in. Not something you bought specifically for the shoot that still has the tags on. Wear something that makes you feel like you — confident and comfortable. That energy shows up in the photos, I promise.
Don't stress about posing. That's literally my job. I'll guide you through everything. Most of my favorite shots happen in the in-between moments anyway — the laughing, the whispering, the real stuff.
